The song was a tribute to Chilean protest singer Víctor Jara with vocals by Robert Wyatt and Tracey Thorn from the band Everything but the Girl. The debut album Working Nights was released in April 1985 with vocalist Juliet Roberts added as a member of the band. Initial copies of the LP had a bonus 12 disc with Jalaluddin Jalal Mansur Nuriddin also known as Lightnin' Rod, birth name Alafia Pudin of The Last Poets. Roberts continued as singer on the 1986 album Compañeros and Surrender, released in 1987, but left the band after that year's single, Knocking on Your Door. Appears on the debut album Working Week - Working Nights , 1985. What you really need to know about this record is that as a song Venceremos is just pure joy. From the collection of writers down to the performers (Thorn/Wyatt/Figueroa), dancers (in the video) and the artwork, this was one very exciting release (if not pretty much ignored at the time). A 1984 city-street sounds of the summer song. The 7"/12" version and B/W instrumental version all have wonderfully different endings and experiments on the original so it worth tracking down these pieces. Makes jazz a beautiful idea...

The band Working Week cut a version on this 12inch of the until recently unknown artist classic from Baaska & Scavelli "The Bottom End" (aka official title "Get Off The Ground").

Strangely enough the composition managed to get credited to one of Working Week's musicians though...
What made them think they could get away with it, who knows; perhaps accident by the label...? One thing is for sure, what with most of the London Jazz-Dance scene knowing about the track from the dancefloors after what seemed like (perhaps WAS) the only copy in the UK of the original LONG version of the record by Baaska & Scavelli being handed down from one DJ to another until it reached the hallowed hands of Gilles Peterson who played it under the title "The Bottom End" by artist(s) unknown; this was not going to be un-noticed by them!

The mystery was solved very recently after DJ Seymour Nurse found out the name of the artists (Baaska & Scavelli) after doing a search on the net, over 20 years since the track was 'discovered' by the London scene.

Gilles, not so promptly but still very happily for collectors, has just put the Baaska & Scavelli unreleased SHORT verson on his new Digs America LP. And very nice it is too. This version by Working Week is quite interesting to have as a version and fits nicely as a modern dancefloor jazz tune; if there is such a thing...
