Although Remains leader Barry Tashian had said that it captures the band's prowess better than their studio material, in the event it's a disappointment. Six of the seven songs are cover versions of very well-known rock hits - Johnny B. Goode, I'm A Man, All Day and All of the Night, Hang on Sloopy, Like a Rolling Stone - competently done, but hardly revelatory, as the Remains' chief strength was their excellent songwriting. Though the album was largely overlooked at the time of its original release, The Remains has since received recognition as one of the more cohesive efforts of the era. The Remains formed in 1964, quickly establishing themselves as a popular attraction across New England, and performing in sold-out venues to a loyal fanbase. By the closing strums of the 60s, Boston was making a name for itself in rock circles, and not just for its Dirty Water besides, the Standells were from LA, for Pete Wolfs sake. Its burgeoning rock scene was just starting to drown out the towns stubborn rep for heartfelt folk and far-out psych. No Protean garage bands like The Lost and The Remains who opened for the Beatles set the stage for basement-packing, speaker-blowing rock history in the making - all happening inside a city that was changing just as hard and fast. Time was tight, so a live album was in order: Live And Dangerous was the snarling result, a document of a band that took no prisoners even on mellower tracks like Dancing In The Moonlight. Even though most of Under a Blood Red Sky's album tracks came from shows in Boston and Germany, the Red Rocks visuals stand as U2's last moment of young, ragged glory before mega-stardom set in. Led Zeppelin are undoubtedly one of the greatest live acts of the 1970s, but their only live album from the era - the soundtrack to 1976's The Song Remains The Same - captured them on a rather limp night. Boston arrived in stores on Aug. 25, and brought with it a new sound that would eventually be scornfully dubbed corporate rock. Still, as complicated as Boston's legacy has become over subsequent decades, this first album remains a classic rock touchstone for generations of listeners - and the gateway into a career that none of Boston's members could have imagined in 1976. I was basically a dork that hit the books and liked to build things and did all of the things that you werent supposed to do to be popular, Scholz marveled years later. But somehow I ended up onstage, playing guitar in front of everybody else. 1976's Best Rock Albums. Next: Top 10 Boston Songs
