American Symphonies. The two following symphonies, Samuel Jones' Symphony No. 3, Palo Duro Canyon, and Stephen Albert's Symphony No. 2, were both composed in 1992, well after the serialist avant-garde had disappeared, though their clear sense of tonality and energetic rhythms show no break with the previous generation of symphonists. The performances by Lance Friedel and the London Symphony Orchestra are energetic and vivid, and the super audio sound by BIS brings out inner details that add substantially to the music's interest. Pistons 1955 Symphony No. 6 is a delight, with its heady blend of Coplands wide vistas, Hollywood gilding, and European rigor. Samuel Jones tonal 1992 Symphony No. 3 breathtakingly depicts the geology and history of Texas Palo Duro Canyon alongside a stunning night sky, courtesy of xylophone and celesta. Also from 1992 is the glorious, multilayered Symphony No. 2 by Stephen Albert, who tragically died just before its completion. Heavily influenced by Sibelius, his beautiful masterpiece deserves a wide currency. The work is sometimes referred to as Symphony No. 2, though the composer did not designate that name for the work. First performed in 1914, the original score of this four-movement symphony was lost and subsequently reconstructed. Vaughan Williams continued revisions of the work into its final definitive form, which was published in 1936. The work is scored for: .
