Berlins Berghain club has been hosting Sub:Stance, a dubstep night presented by Hotflush operator and producer Paul Rose, aka Scuba. The clubs label, Ostgut Ton, naturally commissioned Rose for a same-named mix. Despite leaning heavily on recent and forthcoming releases from his own label, the mix makes for an excellent state of dubsteppost-dubstep, early 2010. SUB:STANCE In Retrograde by Scuba, released 02 November 2018 1. Rolling Hitch 2. Ants 3. Gyroscope 4. Buzzsaw 5. Karakter 6. Cloves 7. Lay 8. Cepheid 9. Weberwiese 10. Entrospect 11. Axel Hotflush presents a ten-track album of previously unheard music produced by Scuba during the early part of the five-year run of his legendary SUB:STANCE party at Berghain. From July 2008, SUB:STANCE opened the Berlin institution up to a new set of aesthetics, sparking a conversation between UK artists and Germany's most vibrant music centre. Sub:stance, a bass-centric party led by Scuba and Paul Spymania, has been a quarterly fixture at Berghain in Berlin over the past few years, and launched a New York residency with Blkmarket last summer. He'll be making up for a canceled NYC gig back in September, which would have come on the eve of his most recent album as Planetary Assault Systems, his primary outlet for tough techno productions. Out this month, the LP is a collaboration with US producer Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, formerly of A Tribe Called Quest. Thu, 11 Jun 2020. Mixed by Paul Rose aka Scuba, the man behind Hotflush, Sub:Stance is the collision of two worlds the vitality of UK bass music intertwined with Berghain and all its sensory exhilaration and unique atmosphere. I couldn't have said it better. Released on a label of Berlin's Berghain club, Ostgut Ton, the 24-track mix features some unreleased and exclusive tracks from Scuba himself, as well as Sigha, Pangaea, Untold, Surgeon, Digital Mystikz, and Joker among the many

To me, this is one of the most exciting mix CD's I have ever heard. I wouldn't consider myself as a "dubstep guy", but when listening to this I can say I would be regular at Sub:stance nights in Berghain/P-Bar for sure, if they were still a thing nowadays. Selection is striking, and even though it's seven years already it didn't lost anything.

I agree with everything you said. This mix is all the more refreshing for its focus and atmosphere especially considering how far away it is from Scuba's usual techno sets and the commercial dubstep of that time.

Mixed by Paul Rose (aka Scuba), the man behind Hotflush, Sub:Stance "is the collision of two worlds – the vitality of UK bass music intertwined with Berghain and all it’s sensory exhilaration and unique atmosphere." I couldn't have said it better. Released on a label of Berlin's Berghain club, Ostgut Ton, the 24-track mix features some unreleased and exclusive tracks from Scuba himself, as well as Sigha, Pangaea, Untold, Surgeon, Digital Mystikz, and Joker among the many. The journey traverses through minor progressions of bass heavy dubstep until the 4/4 kick picks up the pace with its hollow punch, attributed to Surgeon's style. And now we're in that creepy, cold, and industrial territory of abandoned warehouses turned into clubs turned into temples of aural worship, where frequencies rise from the basement, up through the pipe organs, and drop back to the floor. I only wish that I could hear this in Berghain.
