Philip Wells Woods November 2, 1931 September 29, 2015 was an American jazz alto saxophonist, clarinetist, bandleader, and composer. Woods was born in Springfield, Massachusetts. He studied music with Lennie Tristano, who influenced him greatly, at the Manhattan School of Music and at the Juilliard School. His friend, Joe Lopes, coached him on clarinet as there was no saxophone major at Juilliard at the time. Although he did not copy Charlie Bird Parker, he was known as the New Bird, a nickname. Album Remarks & Appraisals: Phil Woods' New Celebration is the long-awaited follow-up to his 1997 Grammy Award-nominated release Celebration. Woods' extraordinary writing creates an ideal setting for his solo virtuosity. But more than being a launching pad for solos, the arrangements display a mastery of context that makes each piece a fully conceived and compelling musical story. Album Notes. Personnel: Najwa Parkins vocals Matt. The Festival Orchestra includes Woods neighbors in eastern Pennsylvania along with his quintet: trumpeter Brian Lynch, pianist Bill Charlap, bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin. The tunes include the Woods compositions Reets Neet, a fiery bebop opener the ballad Goodbye Mr. Evans, a glowing tribute to Bill Evans Hows Your Mama, the quintets zigzagging, quote-filled theme and six others. Woods is one of jazzs most durable and consistent talents. Now he has opened another avenue of expression, and, as you would expect, everything is top-notch. Phil Woods and the Festival Orchestra - Celebration - CD. Track Listings. Disc: 1. Here are some highlights: - The album opens with Reet's Neet, nearly 9 minutes of swinging ensemble and nice solos from trumpet, tenor, piano, and bass in addition to Phil's alto. Nefertiti and Banja Luka each take you into a groove that feels so good, you'll find yourself wanting to listen to it over and over. I was never very fond of Willow Weep for Me as a jazz standard, but Phil's arrangement, a lively trombone feature, gives the tune new life and keeps it interesting. Tracklist The Windmills Of Your Mind 4:13 A Song For You 3:59 Nicole 3:28 The Summer Knows 2:55 We've Only Just Begun 2:47 I Was Born In Love With You 3: album with the renowned Phil Woods leading a big band or jazz orchestra is cause for celebration, especially so when he has written all but one of the charts and takes the bulk of the alto solos. More than fifteen years have passed since Woods last recorded with the COTA Festival Orchestra from his home precinct in Delaware Gap, PA, and that earlier album Celebration, Concord 4770 was nominated for a Grammy Award. Bottom line: a superlative album, among the best to come along since that first Celebration way back in 1997. Track Listing
