I'm glad I purchased Rhapsody in Blue, but I took away one star because of the other tunes. That's my call and I'm sure others will disagree. You can't top Rhapsody in Blue. A French pianist and Monte Carlo orchestra under an American conductor playing Gershwin. It all works out pretty well. The one disappointing performance is of Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin recorded an abridged version of Rhapsody in Blue with Paul Whiteman and his orchestra for the Victor Talking Machine Company in 1924, soon after the world premiere. Gershwin and the same orchestra made an electrical recording of the abridged version for Victor in 1927. However, a dispute in the studio over interpretation angered Whiteman and he left. In 1929, Gershwin supervised the world premiere recording of An American in Paris with Nathaniel Shilkret and the Victor Symphony Orchestra. Gershwin's role in the recording was rather limited, particularly because Shilkret was conducting and had his own ideas about the music. The composition was commissioned by the bandleader Paul Whiteman. It was orchestrated by Ferde Grofé several times, including the original 1924 scoring, the 1926 theater orchestra setting, and the 1942 symphony orchestra scoring, though completed earlier.
