Album

Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers is the debut solo album of Gene Clark, released in February 1967 on Columbia Records, catalogue CS 9418. It was his first effort after his departure from folk-rock group the Byrds in 1966. Though the album was a critical success and it established Clark as a talented singer-songwriter, it appeared very close to the scheduled release date for the Byrds' album Younger Than Yesterday in both the United States and the United Kingdom, hampering its possibilities for. The first album that Gene Clark released after his departure from the Byrds followed very closely on the model of his earlier efforts on the Byrds' first two albums. Still, despite such solid songs and backing musicians, Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers failed to make much of an impact, perhaps due to its being released in the same week as the Byrds' Younger Than Yesterday, itself a tour de force that cemented their influence. However, in the realm of Clark's recorded output, this album stands as the one of the best, if not the best, example of how powerful a singer, writer, and bandleader he was. The 2007 release however includes bonus tracks, one of which is the Dylanesque Only Colombe which I am quite fond of, this also features on Back to Mine Volume 16: Death In Vegas which is far superior to this album. Gene Clarks first solo effort, Gene Clark With the Gosdin Brothers, features some of the most authentic efforts at fusing country with rock n roll ever to grace a vinyl record. Though it was largely overlooked upon its release, fans of Gram Parsons, and mid-period Stones will find themselves instinctively drawn to Clarks elegant, country-tinged compositions. The fantastic Tried So Hard , with its cascading guitars and multi-layered country harmonies is the sets centerpiece, but nearly every song here is a gem worthy of admiration. Echoes, 03:15.
