On October 31, 1960, Elvis Presley cut a version of the song with plans to put it on his RCA gospel album His Hand in Mine. Three takes were recorded, but neither Elvis nor the Jordanaires, who provided background vocals, were satisfied. Eventually it was decided to shelve the recordings and move on. On April 6, 1965, Crying In the Chapel was issued on RCA's Gold Standard Series. More than 50 artists worldwide have released a version of Crying in the Chapel. The R&B group, the Orioles, recorded a cover version of the song which became a major success in 1953. Three takes were recorded, but neither Elvis nor The Jordanaires, who provided background vocals, were satisfied. On April 6, 1965 Crying In the Chapel was issued on RCA's Gold Standard Series. It became Elvis' first million seller since Return to Sender in 1962 and his greatest chart success over a six-year span. The single hit number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and topped the Easy Listening chart for seven weeks. The fundamental reason that Crying In the Chapel was left off of 1960s His Hand In Mine was that Elvis thought he could do better. The principal reason for its release some five years later was, essentially, to serve as a space-filler, a buffer between soundtrack singles that might capitalize on the Easter mood for religious music. This was one instance in which Elvis seriously underestimated his achievement. The singles success took everybody by surprise, as it rose rapidly to Number Three on the pop charts, sold a million copies, and went all the way to Number One in England. You saw me crying in the chapel The tears I shed were tears of joy I know the meaning of contentment Now I am happy with the Lord. Just a plain and simple chapel Where humble people go to pray I pray the Lord that I'll grow stronger As I live from day to day. I've searched and I've searched But I couldn't find No way on earth To gain peace of mind. Now I'm happy in the chapel Where people are of one accord We gather in the chapel Just to sing and praise the Lord. You'll searched and you'll searched But you couldn't find No wa. Crying in the Chapel is a song written by Artie Glenn for his son Darrell to sing. On October 30, 1960, Elvis Presley recorded a version of the song during the sessions for his RCA Records gospel album, His Hand in Mine. It was not included on that album, but rather was held back by RCA and finally released as an Easter Special single 447-0643 in April 1965, hitting number three on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and topping the Easy Listening chart for six weeks, the greatest chart success for Presley over a six-year span.
